The setting is convenient, but secluded. The cabin is located at the base of Apache Ridge. There isn't another house to be seen for miles. There are the Snow capped Sangre de Cristos to the West and the Green Mountains to the North and East. From the top of Apache Ridge, you can see Big Sheep and Little Sheep Mountain. The driveway is over 1 mile long and is a dirt road. If rain or snow is in the forecast, 4WD is required.
Gardner is a historic town originally founded along the stage route from Westcliffe/Silvercliffe to Walsenburg. Some of the newly paved highway 69 is a proposed part of the 'Frontier Pathways Scenic Byway' passing the landmark Gardner Butte just as you come thru town. The entire area was hunting grounds for Apache, Comanche, and Ute Indians with plenty of artifacts and arrowheads remaining. In the 1960's the town became a mecca for hippies. Communes were formed and at least one still exists.
While we mostly cater to hunters, this property is a great place to get away from the city lights and see the open sky. It's large enough to accomodate family gatherings and there are loads of attractions within an hour's drive including Great Sand Dunes National Park and Trout Fishing Opportunities.

We were a 4 person hunting group during the October rifle season. The Elk Haus accommodations exceeded our expectations. Clean, spacious, and more than we could ask for during a hunting trip. We were also very successful with the hunt. We filled 1 Bull Tag, 3 Cow Elk Tags and 1 Buck Mule deer tag. Saw plenty of animals. It was nice to have the opportunity to process our meat at the Cabin or take a quick trip into town for processing. Got a chance to meet and visit with the owner, Cameron and enjoyed his insight and stories of the property.
The location is a little remote, but we were fine with the location, it has such beautiful views, Mountains everywhere!!! It was quite and peaceful, something our family was looking forward to! Cabin is beautiful, spacious, clean, and everything you need to cook and keep kidos entertained. Cameron the owner was amazing to talk to and very knowledgeable of the area! Loved this cabin, our new peace of heaven. Planning on going back next year!
The Elk Haus was everything that we hoped for! Definitely secluded from everything but close enough to get whatever we needed. We spent our time talking, laughing, cooking, playing cards and Yahtzee and just catching up on everyday life! We would recommend this place to anyone that just needs to get away from their busy lives and regroup!! Thank You!
The property was beautiful, the house was huge, charming, rustic and had everything we needed! The host was awesome to work with! We had a great family vacation!
My family and I have been to Elk Haus twice. The first time was 8 years ago and I fell in love with it. Ever since I have been dying to go back and we finally made it this year. The improvements Cameron has made over the years are fantastic and the cabin is stunning. The hiking and photography opportunities are endless, privacy is definitely not a concern, and oh my word the stars. You do need to bring sheets, towels, and paper products, but the kitchen is well stocked with any spice or tool you could ever want or need. The pool table and arcade game in the gameroom are a nice touch. We ventured to Westcliffe several times for their 4th of July events and it is an easy drive. I reccomend their grocery store over the one in Walsenberg. We didn't see much wildlife while there - but we know they're around because we saw plenty of tracks and some scavenger left us their leftovers one night - a plus for people like us who enjoy nature. This really is a hidden gem. If you want to get away from your busy lives and take time to breathe and regroup, this is the place. We plan on returning next year, and the year after that... so long as Cameron is renting it out. I was a little bummed about the master bathtub being inoperative because I was looking forward to it, but the improvements made up for it. My only other comment to future renters - is dispose of your trash properly. While hiking we came across many places where people decided to toss the trash or burn it and leave the litter strewn about. Not cool. This is not a reflection on the property as the property is expansive and it isn't something a cleaning crew would notice. Don't be that person. It isn't good for the wildlife or the property in general. Gardner has trash drop off on Saturday's for a minimal fee.
We really enjoyed our stay here. It is a great place for a large number of people, we had 9 people. The view is beautiful, there was a great breeze on the patio. It was a little warm inside and would have been a little better if there had been screens on all of the windows, but it worked out fine. We would definintely stay there again.
We had an absolutely amazing time at the Gardner cabin. There was enough room for everyone. The AC/water pressure/ and overall cleanliness of the house was five stars. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils. Some of our favorite parts were sitting out on the patio in the mornings and taking walks around the property. 10/10 recommend for a slightly bigger group wanting to get away!
I couldn’t ask for a better place to go on my first elk hunt. I harvested a bull on the first day of first rifle season and all three of my hunting partners each had a bull down by the third day! All four bulls were taken right on the property--only a few hundred yards from the cabin. We spent the rest of our week hanging out in the cabin, playing pool, and telling stories about the hunts. We’d all love to come back again.
House, facilities were everything as described......and much better. The property is absolutely gorgeous and the house has plenty of Windows for a continuous view. Everything worked well and we were extremely satisfied. We had a family vacation (10 people at times)'and the home accommodated our group fine. We also elk hunted for late season elk (cow) and saw plenty of sign but we're unable to score. Some of our party skied at Monarch during the stay. Must have 4x4 for roadway in during extreme conditions.
The property is such a beautiful location and you have to understand that it is a hunting cabin.
